Kiva.org what is it, and how does it work?

Kiva is a nonprofit that offers crowdfunded, interest-free loans to small business owners around the world. Instead of a traditional loan from a bank, Kiva loans are funded by everyday people who choose to support entrepreneurs by lending as little as $25 at a time.

The beauty of Kiva is that it’s built on trust, generosity, and community—a few of my favorite things.

How Does It Work?

Here’s the short version of the process:

  1. Application & Review: I applied and shared my business story with Kiva. They reviewed my application, business purpose, and community connections.

  2. Private Fundraising Phase: I had to gather support from at least 15 lenders to show that my community believes in me. I’m so grateful to everyone who helped me get there!

  3. Public Funding Phase: Now, my loan is live on the Kiva website and available for anyone—family, friends, strangers—to support.

  4. Loan Use: The $8,000 I’ve requested will help me cover unexpected construction costs and purchase the essential items needed to welcome students into the new studio space—think yoga props, signage, and tools to create a calm experience.

  5. Repayment: I’ll repay the loan in small installments over time. As I do, lenders get their money back—and they can choose to lend again to someone else in need.

How You Can Help

If you feel called to support this journey, here’s how:

  • Visit my Kiva loan page (I can send you the direct link!)

  • Lend $25 (or more if you’d like)—this is a loan, not a donation, and you’ll be paid back as I repay

  • Share the link with someone else who believes in small business, yoga, wellness, or kindness

Why This Matters

This loan isn’t just about finishing construction—it’s about building something bigger than me. It’s about creating a welcoming space for breath, movement, stillness, and connection. A space where people of all backgrounds feel seen, supported, and centered.

Thank you for being curious. Thank you for asking questions. And thank you for walking beside me as I build something rooted in love and community.

With deep gratitude,

Michelle
