Why You Won’t Find Mirrors in Our Yoga Studio

At Beyond Yoga, we believe in cultivating an environment where you can truly connect with yourself—mind, body, and spirit. Recently, I was asked if our studio would have mirrors, and I realized that this question offers a great opportunity to share the philosophy behind our space.

Mirrors have a tendency to shift our attention away from the present moment and bring it to something external. While they might help with alignment or give us a visual reference, they often distract from the deeper experience we’re aiming for in yoga. Instead of tuning into how our bodies feel in each pose, we might end up focusing on how we think we look.

For me, the absence of mirrors is an intentional choice to create a space where we are not distracted by judgment. Mirrors can distort, and they rarely show us the true beauty others see in us. I want to encourage you to shift your gaze inward and focus on how each movement feels, rather than how it looks in reflection. This practice of self-acceptance and mindfulness is a key component of the work we do here, and I truly believe it helps deepen your connection to yourself.

In our busy world, we often spend too much time focused on what we don’t like about ourselves. We live in a society that constantly feeds us ideals of perfection, but at Beyond Yoga, I want to offer a different experience—one that celebrates who you are in this moment, just as you are. When we remove the mirror, we remove the temptation to criticize ourselves and instead invite you to embrace the journey, not just the destination.

So, whether you’re here for a yoga class, a coaching session, or simply a moment of quiet reflection, know that you are beautiful and enough, just as you are. And you’ll never need a mirror to remind you of that.
